This week, HB 837, co-sponsored by Rep. Tommy Gregory and Rep. Tom Fabricio, swept through the Florida Legislature and has now been signed by Governor Ron DeSantis into law. This tort reform package has been an important initiative for many state legislators and their constituents during the 2023 Legislative Session.
For many years, Florida has suffered heavily from frivolous claims and lawsuit abuse, and although special sessions have been called and strong efforts have been made to correct the problem, insurance premiums continue to rise, and more and more providers are leaving the state.
But now, many Floridians are hopeful that with the recently approved HB 837, it will be harder for those wanting to file lawsuits to take legal action against insurance companies. This important event signals the beginning of a new era within Florida’s civil justice system, where balance and affordability are prioritized above all. This legislation is exactly the type of public policy that has enabled Florida to climb out of the “judicial hellhole” status it endured for so many years.
Once again, Florida leadership has fought hard and won, reestablishing accountability, transparency, and balance at all levels of our state’s government. It is important that Florida continues to elect legislators and public officials who will listen to the needs of hardworking taxpayers and take the actions needed to make our state a better place.
